Traveling

Tomorrow we're island hopping over to the Big Island for a little weekend getaway! I'm so excited because we're staying at Waikoloa Village, which we hear is seriously amazing and it'll be our first little family trip!
On the flip side of that though, I'm a little nervous about traveling with Rowan and I was wondering if any of you had any tips? We'll be staying from Saturday morning to Monday night so we have to plan for 3 days.
What should/shouldn't I pack?
What should we wait to buy there?
Any tips for the flight besides feeding Ro at take off and landing?
Anything else you'd suggest?

Luckily it's just a 40 min flight and will be a good test of how Rowan handles flying before we travel all the way to Kentucky in June! Can't wait to read all your tips and tricks, thanks!

  2. I don't have much advice for Rowan as I haven't traveled with a lil babes yet but I'm from Kona and you will absolutely LOVE the big island. If you can here are 3 things you just can't miss.
    1. Kua Bay Beach Park (aka Manini'owali Beach Park) it's small and there's not much parking but the beach is literally to die for..I promise. Compared to the beach at the Hilton this one will rock your socks :)
    2. Hayashi's (aka You Make The Roll) is a small hole in the wall Sushi spot. It's the #1 local spot for delicious HUGE sushi rolls. It's a little hard to find but its right off of alii drive and completely worth stopping at plus its CHEAP. My favorite is a Ninja Star roll (soo good).
    3. I don't know what your budget is like but if you can, hop on a whale watching tour. My dad used to run a boat out of Waikaloa (where the hilton is) and you will see sooo many whales its ridiculous...now that I think about it there might not be as many since its March but totally worth asking the beach guys there and checking it out.

Oh also, if you or your husband like scuba diving I can get you on a great boat for a nice price (my dad's a boat captain for a dive company).

I'm sorry I wrote so much and I just started following your blog but i love the big island and just want everyone who visits to really get to experience how amazing it is :)

  3. If she uses a paci a clip is good for the trip...my boys dropped theirs all the time and we ended up getting clips for the way back. Airports and vacations are dirty and it was nice not having to worry about losing the pacies!

And we had lots of books/toys whatnot for the plane. The boys were very up-down the whole time and needed lots of entertainment. But our flight was 2 1/2 hours...and I did it on the way back by myself with two haha! So going with your hubby and only one baby should be cake for an only 40 min flight!

  4. I just took our baby to Mexico in November, and I took our own Pack n'Play playpen- as well as all of his bedding that he had been sleeping with- so that they still smelled like his bed at home. With everything so new, I think sleep is extra important when we're travelling! Have SO much fun, I'm sure she'll be a great little traveller :)

  5. Go to Kona (Target, Walmart, Kmart) and get anything else you might need (diapers, etc) because everything at the hotel is super expensive. The Kings and Queens shops are about a 15 minute walk from the hotel...lots of little stores and restaurants. Have fun!!

  7. Looks so cool, I want to visit Hawaii, it's beautiful. On packing don't waste space packing diapers, pack the diaper bag with enough diapers for the trip over and buy diapers once you're there. She will probably sleep during the flight especially if movement rocks her to sleep. Pack extra everything unless you plan on shopping for clothes there then you can pack less and wear what you buy unless you want to save the loot for later.

  10. What should/shouldn't I pack?
Sunscreen, clothes, diapers, wipes, rash medicine, medicine for teething , sunhats, blanket for the beach? , beach toys for baby and whatever medicine you use for fevers. Sometimes kids process a virus really quickly and with a fever. It's totally normal but instead of freaking out- you'll be able to give her some medicine and make her feel better.

What should we wait to buy there?
Don't know....It looks like it is going to be an amazing trip.

Any tips for the flight besides feeding Ro at take off and landing?
Breastfeeding! I hear a pacifier will work, or a bottle too.

    Anything else you'd suggest?
I remember the first time I traveled with my daughter. I felt this crazy realization that my daughter kinda belonged to me. I could take her anywhere I wanted to take her! Sometimes I wondered if anyone knew how green I was that they'd take the kid away. Turns out those are pretty common fears among all mothers- at least I'm not alone:)

I'm sure you are gonna have a wonderful trip. I can tell you're a great mother by how much you love Rowan and how you talk about her. That is one well kept baby!

    Happy Vacation,
    Claire

  11. Awwww, I LOVE Waikoloa Village! We stayed there every year for years when I was a child, then owned a home in Puako (just a hop up the coast) for a bit. Such good memories!

Enjoy your stay! Please post pics so I can reminisce!
