Papa Post

A guest post by yours truly
Ro's pop..

For this month's installment of Papa Post I've felt compelled to share my opinion about certain things pertaining to music and the industry. A little while ago I was introduced to a song that one of the New York Housewives' husband released. I was somewhat sickened. Unfortunately he wasn't the first less than average talent to release a, in my opinion, lame song. Now there's this Rebecca Black chick and countless others. I feel sad that our society is accepting of this, I mean these people are getting rich off these songs that are so over produced and not even really them, there's so many effects and auto tune computer made mumbo jumbo. I'm not saying I'm the best and know everything but I do feel it's ridiculous how the world has created these music monsters. There's so much real talent in this world that goes unnoticed, I could go on for days about recording techniques, things about American Idol and such but I wont. I mostly wanted to say that it sucks that just cause you're rich or were involved in some stupid reality tv show, people give you a pat on the back and say something is great when in reality "don't quit your day job" should be said. Don't get me wrong, have fun and do what makes you happy, but sometimes the truth hurts and I think people need to be more honest with each other and we won't have to be subjected to madness like "Friday", which by the way thanks for ruining the day and the movie.

  2. While I do listen to some of the overproduced crap from time to time, I try not to make a habit of it and I try even harder to support musicians working and creating from the heart. Friday is one of the lowest of the low I've seen in a while. I hope it gets passed off as a joke and this girl does NOT get any more money from this but who knows. Maybe she'll even be inspired to take voice lessons or write real songs. One can dream right?

  3. I don't really think it's about true talent anymore because with technology really ANYONE can "sound" talented! You know? I think it's about entertainment value! If you are just crazy enough to do something that NO one else would do, then I think Hollywood is your open door. Have you ever seen Idiocracy (the movie)? No? Go rent it, that's where we are all headed.....

  4. This is so frustrating to all struggling musicians, to be out there hustling and see people get exposure just because they were willing to make an ass of themselves on tv and because someone else saw a way to make a quick buck.

The digital age has been wonderful for independent artists, but while it opens up the doors for anyone to distribute their music, it also opened the door for any hack with a bank account to make a vanity project for their 13 year old and subject the rest of the world to it.

  5. "thanks for ruining the day and the movie." - hahah.

i agree with you about the music industry, but it's just easier to let the "privileged" do what they want, they're going to anyway. besides, their music isn't getting notoriety for raw talent; it's just more fodder for parodies and to poke fun at.

at the same time, i think a lot of amazing groups are surfacing more than ever. either a lot more people have gone "underground" or they have finally been recognized.

  6. Thank you! I completely agree. I do like a nice poppy song every now and then, but what ever happened to musician's being musicians? Playing instruments, having an actual band, and raw vocals? Everyone seems to be using computers, or auto tune now days! And like you said, some of these "artist" SHOULDN'T quit their day jobs.

  7. I hardly ever listen to the radio anymore for this exact reason. Auto tune has gotten out of hand, and so many talented people won't even be heard because talent hardly means anything anymore. Sad music world.

  9. Preach it. It's hard listening to the radio these days. And even harder when you're a musician/producer, because everyone things you're jealous. Argh!

  10. Amen, brotha! I totally agree with you. Auto tune is the devil and should be burned at the stake.

  11. totally agree.
this goes for so many areas of creativity. all of a sudden if youre on tv, you're automatically talented enough to put your face behind a clothing, handbag, jewelry or perfume line. it just cheapens it all really... unfortunately too many support it so it continues to be a success for talentless people.

  12. This is one of the best posts that I've read in a long time! It's really sad what "music" has become into! My husband and I just listen to old music, because there's pretty much nothing on the radio worth listening to anymore.
And not only about music. Some great authors spend their lives writing and never get anything out of it, while girls like "Snooki" become NY times best-sellers. It's just SAD.
