What’s In My Hospital Bag?

Now that I’ve already had a baby I’m aware of the fact that you don’t actually need to bring much to the hospital after all. Last time we brought a bunch of unnecessary things and I’m pretty sure I didn’t take a single thing out of that bag except for my extra clothes. So this time around I’m keeping that in mind and only bringing things that I think we’ll actually reach for. Not everything is pictured here because I’m either still looking for it or it will be packed closer to my due date but I will get into that below. Also, this weekender bag that we’re using is from Target, in case any of you are interested.

Last time I labored/gave birth in a comfy tube top dress of my own. This time I plan on wearing a comfy robe. I’m actually bringing two, one dark cotton one to labor/give birth in and one “nicer” robe to change into once I’ve had the baby and gotten settled in for continuous rounds of cuddles, breastfeeding and visits from family and friends. I’ll also be bringing a nursing bra, warm socks with rubber soled bottoms, slippers (not pictured), toothbrushes/paste and deodorant for me and Derek. The nipple shield was a lifesaver last time around so I will be bringing a couple with me just in case. Besides the robe, the horrible granny underwear and aftercare products will be provided by the hospital so I’ll be wearing those while there and then I’m bringing a plain black tee shirt dress to wear home. I thought about bringing some pjs but honestly I’ll probably live in my robe while there so I’m really not concerned about them. As for things not pictured: Derek will have a change of clothes or two, his iPad, our phones and all of our chargers. We may also bring a couple of snacks but we were perfectly fine with the hospital food last time so that’s not even necessary really.

For the baby we’ll be bringing a few of her blankets and outfits/bows, a letter board for the baby announcement ‘cause it was too cute to pass up (not necessary but I know we’ll use it), our camera to document everything (extra batteries not pictured but we’ll for sure have them) and a thank you card for the staff. Last time my mom ran out and got donuts for us to give to them along with a card on our way out. I definitely will be buying them some kind of treat to go with the card this time as well. One important thing not pictured is a gift to Rowan from the baby. I’ve been trying to get an idea of something that Rowan really wants, so I haven’t gotten it yet but I know it will be a very sweet surprise for her. She’s old enough that she will probably ask suspicious questions about “how the baby got it for her” but young enough to believe in Santa and magic. So I know she’ll be excited to hear about the “baby fairy” who helps bring presents to older siblings on behalf of new babies... 😉.

Other than that we will of course have the new infant carseat installed and ready to go and the grandparents on hand for any extra help needed. We’re getting close people! The excitement is definitely building over here. See you soon baby bird!

Maternity Photos

We went all out with our 1950’s inspired maternity pictures when I was pregnant with Rowan. I love those photos and still admire them on our picture wall along our staircase every time I walk by them. But that pregnancy was easy. It was easy and my first and a big cheery photoshoot felt representative of that. I was a different person then. This pregnancy has been a light in my life when I was very much in the dark but because of my health issues, has also been much harder. I’m still enjoying it but there’s so much more going on. Weird/hard symptoms, I already have a child to watch and entertain and care for and overall more emotional for me. I felt like I wanted a more stripped down maternity shoot this time because that’s how I feel right now. Stripped down to my rawest self and navigating a lot of change. With that comes a feeling of chaos but also a calmness within myself to handle it all. These feelings sparked my idea for this simple shoot. I also wanted it to have a 1960’s vibe, with grain and grit and maybe Lana Del Rey was playing in the background as these pictures were brought to life. I was hesitant to even share them because yes, I’m technically in my underwear.. but realized that their point is the celebration of the pregnancy and the body that I was thankfully given to carry it out. It’s no different than bikini pictures on the beach anyway. I absolutely love the way that they came out and will cherish them and this time in my life. I can’t wait to meet our newest little birdie come March.

Bumpdate / Week 31

How far along: 31 weeks, 3 days.

Baby size: Over 16 inches and about 3 1/3 pounds.

Must have items: Cocoa butter lotion, chapstick, tons of water, and back/foot massages from Derek because this mama has been SO SORE.

New symptoms: My stomach feels crazy tight now, like it couldn’t stretch any more which sucks because I still have 9 weeks to go. Also, the baby has been kicking so much in one spot that it feels like she’s bruised it from the inside and every time she kicks/hits there now it’s super painful. My hip and back pain is horrible every day and sometimes I catch myself doing the “pregnant waddle”.. so that’s fun. Using the restroom all the time and feeling like I can't breath sucks. Oh and all of my “boat symptoms” came back when I got Rowan’s cold over winter break and they still haven’t gone away yet. Basically I’ve gotten crazy uncomfortable but I’m trying to stay positive and enjoy the pregnancy while it lasts. I say this all the time but it’s going by so fast.

Sleep: The baby kicks wake me up multiple times a night but I can always fall right back to sleep so it’s been good. I’ve still had RLS but not every night.

Cravings: No cravings right now, I’m just trying to eat as healthy as I can. Except for on the weekends. Weekends are fair game.

Baby movements: Some are painful at this point but her little movements are still my favorite experience. I will say, this baby feels way stronger than Rowan did for whatever reason. I’ve even googled “girl names that mean strength” because she’s so strong and active in my belly. Didn’t like any of the girl names that popped up by the way.

Gender: Girl

Favorite moment: Rowan talking to the baby and “kissing her” goodbye when I drop her off at school.

Least favorite moment: See “new symptoms” above.
